Giving – A Great Habit

I remember my mother constantly saying to me, “It is better to give then it is to receive”.  I didn’t realize the significance of what she was saying until my teens when I started doing some volunteer work in aid of the needy.

I will never forget the look on the faces of a mother and father when my fraternity chapter took them under its  wing during the Christmas season.  We were able to supply gifts for their four children and a meal that was fitting for the season.  The feeling that we experienced was next to none.  I finally understood what my mother told me.

I believe that helping others is one of the greatest gifts one can give to themselves.  And you never know where giving can lead you or who you will meet along the way.

To quote my friend John Stevens, “Giving can go in many directions; not giving goes nowhere.”
