Moment in Time – March 21

In keeping with the requests of my colleagues, here’s  an excerpt from my  weekly feature on music that will air this Sunday on  the  Internet radio show, Treasure Island Oldies  (www.treasureislandoldies.com).   The show is  hosted by my good friend, Michael Godin, who spins  “lost treasures”  on Sunday evenings from 6:00 pm  – 10:00 pm Pacific time.

The  feature will air around 8:20 pm PDT and starts out like this:

IN THE MID 50’S THE BRONX IN NEW YORK CITY FEATURED A NUMBER OF VOCAL GROUPS WHO ALL ASPIRED TO HAVING A HIT ON THE BILLBOARD CHARTS AND BECOMING NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED.
IN 1955 ONE GROUP FROM THE BRONX STARTED OUT SINGING UNDER SUCH NAMES AS THE STARLIGHTS AND THE GLEAMERS BEFORE SETTLING DOWN WITH A NEW NAME AND A BILLBOARD RELEASE IN 1959.
THEY WENT ON TO RELEASE, WHAT APPEARED TO BE, A VERY SUCCESSFUL FOLLOW UP RECORD.   UNFORTUNATELY, THE GROUP’S MANAGER GOT THEM EMBROILED IN A LAWSUIT WITH LOCAL BOOKERS, WHICH RESULTED IN LIMITED DISTRIBUTION AND NO NATIONAL AIRPLAY.   AND WE’LL BE BACK WITH MORE ON THEIR MOMENT IN TIME AFTER THIS.

And here’s the first 30+ seconds of this song.   [audio:Eternals-Babalus-Wedding-Day-Promo.mp3]

Hope you get the opportunity to listen in on Sunday to hear the rest of the song  and find out who that group was.   By the way, this song has become a favourite of fans of Doo Wop music.
