The Comeback Kids

Posted by Tom Locke on October 11th, 2010 filed in Business, Life, Sports ... All Sorts

I’m just back from my annual sojourn to the World Senior Games in St. George, Utah.   This year I celebrated my 10th anniversary at the Games in grand style.

Competing in the softball category, I was again blessed with the opportunity of playing with the Marauders, one of the premier teams in Canada, who  had already won the BC Provincials and the Canadian Nationals this year.

If there was ever a time in my life where Yogi Berra’s famous saying “It’s never over until its over” rang true, it was at this tournament.

In storybook fashion, in the bottom of the 7th of our first two playoff games, we came back from 7 and  9   run deficits  respectively to win.   We then went on to win the championship gold medal game 18 – 15.

Reflecting on our achievement, I couldn’t help but smile at some other “words” that had been drilled into me over my years in business.   Keep your focus, believe in yourself  and never give up – your determination will see you through.

It’s amazing what can be achieved on the ball field and in the office when your team has that mindset.

Tom’s writing is only surpassed by his leadoff hitting. What a storybook tournament Tom compiled, batting over .800 as leadoff batter and leading by example offensively and defensively. So proud to be his teammate and didn’t mind telling him so. Way too young to retire from this game.
