Reflecting On Your Life

Earlier this year in one of my blogs, I tried to encourage you to take some time out to write your life story with a focus on reflecting on things in your life that were meaningful to you  and/or made you feel that your life counted.

In discussing  this with Ted Pierrepoint, a good friend and former business colleague, he told me that he used poetry to  bring out things that were meaningful to him.  As an example, Ted wrote this poem about his days growing up in Barbados  and his return visits.

This Island Paradise

I remember as a young boy, walking on the sandy shore

Where the water was so clear, you could see the ocean floor

The sound of the surf washing upon my feet

were the sounds I’ve heard so many times before

We played the games and surfed the tides and met with friends besides

It takes me back to better simpler times on this island paradise

I recall the sound of breaking waves that lulled us off to sleep

The breeze was so cool you didn’t have to count sheep

Many years have passed since then. I’ve grown and spread my wings

and done so many different things in a land so far away

This is the land I made my own and here is where I’ll stay

I visit now and then and meet with family and friends, and just sit

and watch the tides

on this my island paradise.
